Types of Banking Jobs

There are mainly two types of banks in a country:

  1. Commercial Bank (SBI, HDFC Bank, etc.)
  2. Central Bank (Reserve Bank of India)

Under commercial banks, there are public banks and private banks. Under private banks, there are mainly two types of banking exams:

  • IBPS
  • SBI

IBPS (Institute of Banking & Personnel Selection)

You may have heard of this exam as it is a common exam for banking jobs like Bank PO, Bank Clerk, RRB Office Assistant, RRB Officer, etc. In this article, we will discuss the Bank PO and Bank Clerk exam in detail.

Bank PO

In this exam, there is a 2-year probation period under which you have to perform various jobs in the bank. After the 2 years, you become assistant manager and as promotion happens you then become the manager.

Bank Clerk

In this role, you do public dealings and you can see these people in bank counters. Bank clerk is a lower level role than the Bank PO role.

Bank PO Vs. Bank Clerk

Syllabus for Bank PO

Their exam includes Pre and Mains. Pre consists of 100 marks which is to be done in 1 hour. It consists of mainly 3 papers:

  • English (30 Questions for 30 Marks)
  • Quantitative Aptitude (35 Questions for 35 Marks)
  • Reasoning Ability (35 Questions for 35 Marks)

After Clearing the exam, you have to sit for the Mains exams:

  1. Essay Test/Written Test
  2. Reasoning & Computer Aptitude ( 45 Questions for 60 Marks) = 60 Minutes
  3. General/Economy/Banking Awareness (40 Questions for 40 Marks) = 35 Minutes
  4. English (35 Questions for 40 Marks) = 40 Minutes
  5. Data Analysis & Interpretation (35 Questions for 60 marks) 45 Minutes

After you pass in mains, you have to give an interview clearing which will make you a Bank PO. There are no limits in the number of attempts which means you can take this exam each year if you fail each time.

Syllabus for Bank Clerk

The syllabus for bank clerks is similar to Bank PO but there are some changes. In pre, everything is the same. But in the mains, the subjects change as follows:

  • General & Financial Awareness (50 Questions of 50 Marks) = 35 Minutes
  • English (40 Questions of 40 Marks) = 35 Minutes
  • Reasoning and Computers (50 questions of 60 marks) = 45 Minutes
  • Mathematics (50 questions of 50 marks) = 45 minutes
