How to choose your stream after 10th?

I remember being in the 9th grade and always thinking about what I was going to choose after the 10th grade. At that time, I was very shy, so I was thinking of talking about this problem with my tuition teacher when no one was there, interestingly, I never did that.

Things, you can do before you finally choose your stream!

1) Don’t rush, just observe everything

I know we all want to fix our minds on one idea and don’t want to wander directionless like a shepherd. But I would suggest that it’s not that bad to wander directionless for a while.

I mean, if you are in 9th or 10th beginning, you don’t have to be like I have to choose commerce, so I don’t need to study Science. It’s not a good approach; let your own interests or intuition show where to go.

If you see, you have more interest in history and political science, Arts would be a better stream to go rather than Science or Commerce.

2) Experience all streams

I can’t give anyone better advice than this. “When you pass class 10th, study in Science stream for 1 week, then in Commerce for 1 week, and lastly in Arts for 1 week.”

I know this sounds like a very stupid or impractical idea, and I haven’t even done it on my own, but trust me, it’s the best idea.

When I passed class 10th, I chose the commerce stream, and there was a girl in my class who came in around one month later in the commerce stream. The reason I just mentioned above.

She practically experienced Science stream for 1 week, then Arts stream for 1 week, and finally settled into Commerce stream. She faced some problems, like maintaining notebooks in the beginning, as she came later, but I think it was worth it for her.

Whosoever you will take advice from about choosing a stream, or whatever ideas you have about choosing any stream, it’s all theory until you experience it practically.

Most commerce students watch videos of Rajat Arora. I also used to watch his videos, mainly when I was in classes 11 and 12. I would also recommend that you watch his videos if you choose commerce.

But do you know he first chose PCM (Science Stream) as all his friends were choosing that and his parents were advising him that, and he spent around 3-4 months in it until he realised it’s not for him, and later chose Commerce Stream.

So, you can see, the best case scenario is that you are absolutely clear about your stream, but if you are not, then check it practically by studying in each stream for like 1 week, just like my classmate did.

3) Ask a Career counselor

I know this is theoretical advice, and even I won’t do it. But sometimes, we just need to know the scope of the fields we choose, and career counselors are best in this.

I am pretty sure there would be one in your school, and you can talk to him/her for free of cost, so why not try if it’s free.

Conclusion

I have heard somewhere that in the near future, you can choose from subjects from combination of streams, like you’d be able to choose Biology from Science, Business studies from Commerce, and History from Arts.

That sounds so good to me, but it’s not the scenario right now. So, you have to choose from the 3 streams we are given choices with.

What I have learnt in life is that whatever I do, it must be my own decision, whether right or wrong. I have made it a rule.

It’s so ugly to take action on someone else’s advice and later regret it. That someone could be anyone from your parents to a teacher. So, yes, whatever you do in life, it should be your own decision.
